Tell Congress: Keep Guns Out of the Hands of Dangerous People

Dear lorenzo,

The recent shootings in Tucson have once again exposed flaws in America's efforts to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, drug abusers, the mentally ill and other dangerous people.

Bob Fertik

Mayors Against Illegal Guns

Dear Friend,

Over the past 50 years, our nation has suffered through a series of gun assassinations and mass shootings.

But even more shocking is the growing toll of everyday Americans who are gunned down in big cities and small towns.

It's time for common sense reforms to Fix Gun Checks and stem the tide of gun murders that leaves 34 Americans dead every day.

1) Get all the names of people who should be prohibited from buying guns into the background check system.

2) Require a background check for every gun sale in America.

Thanks for all you do!

This Monday, February 7th at 4pm (or when the Senate adjourns for the day) a special meeting of the Health and Provider Services committee will take place in the Senate chamber.  SB 328 and SB 457 will be heard and amended into one harmful bill that will place further restrictions on abortion and a woman’s right to choose, and we need you there.

There is no doubt about it, we are fighting to protect women's rights and to ensure access to crucial health care services here in Indiana. While on the national level Rep. Christopher Smith (R - NJ) sponsors the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” and attempts to redefine rape, and Lila Rose and her well-funded organization, Live Action, vow to “take down” Planned Parenthood and launch another video campaign.

Reality Check –

√    The law already precludes use of federal dollars for abortions except in the cases of rape, incest, or when a woman’s life is in danger. In Smith’s attempt to further limit these provisions, he redefines rape.  Only “forcible” rape would be covered.  Statutory or coerced rape would not. This means women who have limited mental capacity, or are drugged, or are “just” threatened and have sex against their will, will not be considered rape victims.  And if they are low-income, they would not have access to abortion under Medicaid or the new health reform act

√    Live Action's secret video tapings of Planned Parenthood health centers are being coordinated with anti-choice groups who are pressing for the passage of federal legislation to defund Planned Parenthood and undermine women’s health care. The video released yesterday was reportedly filmed at a Planned Parenthood in New Jersey. The comments on the edited tapes are not consistent with Planned Parenthood’s policies and values and the employee on the video has been terminated.  Live Action’s stated goal is to create controversy and make Planned Parenthood “not feel safe.”

√    These bills and attempts to vilify Planned Parenthood will not reduce the number of unintended pregnancies.  It will not prevent sexually transmitted disease.  Harassing our employees won’t stop us from our mission.  Planned Parenthood of Indiana has been keeping women and families safe for almost 80 years, and we’re here to stay.

√    We need you to come out and show that you care! Send a message to legislators on the State and Federal level by getting more involved. Don't remain faceless as they turn back the clock on women's rights, insult our intelligence and heartlessly redefine such intensely private issues such as rape while further restricting access to vital care.

If you can attend the hearing on Feb. 7, please contact us at advocates@ppin.org. In the meantime, if you haven't done so already sign our petition to let lawmakers know you are ready to protect our patients and your services.

There is strength in numbers and we’re going to need each and every one of you!
