| Somerset v Stewart (England, 1772) An English judge named Lord Mansfield rules slavery does not exist in England stating, “that it is so intrinsically wrong that it is incapable of being introduced into any country, or any reasons moral or political, and can only stand on positive law." (20 State Trials, 1.).” A slave becomes free by stepping on English soil. The colonists wonder if slavery will soon be abolished in all English colonies. Runaway slaves attempt to flee to England to gain their freedom. | 1772 | Extremists have repeatedly attacked democracy in America, a country characterized by a profound ignorance of its own history. | Few are willing to admit that the political establishment has been powerless to prevent the current drift towards tyrannical intolerance and hatred. Once more, the leaders have failed the country and the citizens must look to themselves to protect each other. The current resurgence of anti-democratic extremism is another cycle in the struggle for peace, justice and equality. | 1776 | Revolutionary War Begins (1776) "Patriot" ideology consists of absolutist beliefs rather than considered opinions. Challenging an absolutist belief is felt by the believer to be a form of attack, which in turn justifies conflict as the basic mode of discourse. | The substitution of belief for reasoned opinion has severely eroded civility in political discourse. The goal for many "Patriots" is not to persuade, but to silence opposition -- by force and terrorism if they can get away with it. | 1789 | U.S. Constitution (1789) The writers of the Constitution were very interested in protecting their property. Without using the words “slave” or “slavery,” they made slavery legal and institutionalized it. “No person held in Service or Labour in one State, under the laws thereof, escaping into another, shall, in Consequence of any regulation therein, be discharged from such Service or Labour, but shall be delivered up on Claim of the Party to whom such Service or Labour may be due.” (Art.4, Sec.2) | Bill Of Rights (1791) The first 10 Amendments to the U.S. Constitution were adopted to protect We the People from excesses of government. At this time, We the People meant only white males who owned property and were over 21 years old. The states decided how much property must be owned to qualify to vote or run for office. (New Jersey women who met property and residency requirements could vote when the Constitution was ratified, but the state revoked that right in 1807.) | 1791 |

| Social Security: If You Can't Kill the Program, Screw the People

There are a lot of ways to be petty and cheap and stupid. There are also a lot of ways to stick it to a program, and by extension, the clients of that program, that you don’t like. This week the House Republicans have embarked on an effort to combine the two into one petty, cheap, and stupid way to stick it to the clients of Social Security and the workers who administer the program.
They’re going to sell it to you, if they can, as a way to “lower the deficit,” but what this is really about is making the actual Social Security program work less well - because after all, if a program is popular today, the best way to make it less so is to apply a bit of “treat ‘em like their cars were impounded” to every interaction customers have with the system.
What better way to make sure that happens then to aggressively demoralize everyone who works down at the ol’ Social Security office?

Across America, people are beginning to assert their right of voluntary association to defend the rights of all. It is only a glimmer at present -- the effort may fail.

The paralysis of the liberals has caused many people of progressive sentiment to step outside party politics and turn to social organizing. Here and there, small groups of concerned citizens are banding together. Most noticeable in rural areas, these groups are motivated by a sense of fairness and human dignity.
