As Southern Sudan votes overwhelmingly for independence, will the country witness the birth of a prosperous new nation, or a return to an old war? The population are optimistic but they face serious challenges.
Thousands of Southern Sudanese are returning to witness the birth of their new nation. An 84-year-old refugee cries with joy after returning to the home she hasn't seen since 1949. "I don't know why people call us the poorest people in Africa when we have oil under the surface of our soil", says one jubilant returnee. Yet the country now faces a huge challenge: harnessing its resources without a return to conflict. Many Northerners claim the SPLA have already started looting their farms and shops, and border conflicts still fester. With over half the population already on food aid, coping with the influx of expectant new citizens could push an already desperate nation to the brink.
Satan, the Devil, is a concept strongly supported by the Bible. Jesus had a lot to say about Satan. From Genesis to Revelation, the Devil is presented as a serious threat.

The Disciples wanted to know what it meant. Jesus had these things to say about the Devil in explaining that teaching: He is the Evil One. He is the enemy. Evil men are his sons. He sows weeds among the wheat. (Matthew 13: 38-39) Matthew also quotes Jesus as saying that Satan has a kingdom (12:26) and another name: Beelzebul (12:28). Later on while Jesus is teaching about the Final Judgement he says: “Away to the eternal fire, which has been prepared for the Devil and his angels”. (25:41) Satan has angels with him and eternal fire is his destiny.
James and Peter also wrote about the Devil in their letters. James said “Resist the Devil and he will run away from you.” (James 4: 7) Peter wrote “Your enemy, the Devil, roams around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Be firm in your faith and resist him.” (1 Peter 5: 8-9)
In Ephesians, the same apostle declares about Satan, “the ruler of the spiritual powers in space, the spirit who now controls the people who disobey God.” (Eph.2: 2) and “Put on all the armor that God gives you, so that you will be able to stand up against the Devil’s evil tricks. For we are not fighting against human beings but against the wicked spiritual forces in the heavenly world, the rulers, authorities and cosmic powers of this dark age.” (Eph. 6: 11-12) e be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

How obviously this declaration of our Lord has been shown among the Americans of the United States. They have hitherto passed among some nations, who do not know any thing about their internal concerns, for the most enlightened, humane, charitable, and merciful people upon earth, when at the same time they treat us, the (coloured people) secretly more cruel and unmerciful than any other nation upon earth.—It is a fact, that in our Southern and Western States, there are millions who hold us in chains or in slavery, whose greatest object and glory, is centered in keeping us sunk in the most profound ignorance and stupidity, to make us work without remunerations for our services. In startling interviews they claim the IDF brutally targeted civilians. These soldiers are laying bare the true extent of Israel's cruelty in Gaza. Yet while many expected human rights abuse, the horrific attacks on civilians they speak about was worse than anyone imagined. "It sounds really terrible to say 'cleanse', but those were the orders", says tank commander Ohad. Speaking candidly of the instructions they were given before their entry into Gaza, the soldiers accuse their leaders of a 'disproportionate' response, which aimed to target civilians. After the earthquake hit Haiti on 12 January 2010, some street-children from the slums in Nairobi, Kenya, felt they should do something to support children in Haiti, now living in conditions as bad as or worse than their own. The Wafalme Kidz, hailing from the streets of East Nairobi, made up a song to bring a message of hope to the children in Haiti and a DVD was produced with Sarakasi Trust, Slum Talent Trust and Cultural Video Foundation. The United Nations Office at Nairobi, the United Nations Environment Programme, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme and UNICEF (all from Nairobi) joined hands to make this DVD possible, to make sure we do not forget about Haiti. All funds generated with this initiative will be credited to UNICEF and be used for reconstruction projects directly benefitting children in Haiti.
