I think that many black businesses and entrepreneurs still do not understand the power of marketing their products and services to a broader audience. That doesn't mean that they aren't serious about narrowing the gap. It means that they don't know about all the resources that are out there.
When I started in the tradeshow/tradefair and convention business over 20 years ago, I would go to an event and easily be the only black and female there. What I see now is more and more black professional's realizing that marketing their business is important to up their ROI's (Return on Investment) and exposure. The more market share, the narrower the gap.
We need more education on a high school or college level about practical applications that will help our business owners in promoting their businesses. How unique it would be for students to take some guided field trips to big conventions in their cities. What an eye opener that would be. It is important for our young people to know about other forms of marketing.
My company, Visual Marketing Mentors, LLC is a visual marketing company that facilitates effective tradeshow marketing. "We have to again come together to stop the backward slide of our children," said Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children's Defense Fund and organizer of the 1990 retreat. "We need to revive a policy voice for children. The cradle-to-prison pipeline - breaking it up - is going to be the overall framework from which we move forward."
According to the 2010 Census, black children are three times as likely to be poor as white children. Forty percent of black children are born to poor families, compared with 8 percent of white children. And a black boy born in the past decade has a 1-in-3 chance of going to prison in his lifetime.
"We've got great models, but it's not helpful to the nation when we're saving 2,000 kids and we're losing hundreds of thousands," said Geoffrey Canada, president of the Harlem Children's Zone, a program that has created a web of community services in Harlem to aid impoverished children and their families.
Canada was at Haley's farm 20 years ago and calls it a "magical" place. The farmland, which is owned by the Children's Defense Fund and sits on 157 acres about 30 minutes outside Knoxville, houses an interfaith chapel and a library designed by Vietnam Veterans Memorial designer Maya Lin, among other buildings. Canada returned to the farm last month when Edelman called for a second gathering of black leaders to address childhood poverty and to restart the Black Community Crusade for Children, a network of black leaders focused on addressing the issue.
"It was a clarion call saying, 'Look, we've got to stand up for our children,' " Canada said of the recent retreat, which included 140 black advocates, academics, ministers and youth organizers.
Michelle Alexander, a professor at Ohio State University's college of law and author of "The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness," said that among participants there was a "common commitment to ensuring that the fate of black children today is dramatically improved in coming years." She gave a presentation about her book, in which she argues that high incarceration rates among African Americans is tantamount to discrimination in the Jim Crow South.
The advocates face a major challenge as the federal government and state officials look to cut costs during the economic recession. Not only do Canada and the others want to protect programs such as Head Start and the Children's Health Insurance Program from budget cuts, they want to increase spending.
"We can't help but be concerned with the state of the economy," Canada said. "It's a real time bomb ticking, especially when you look at the states. What I worry about is, as we're making limited choices: Are we making the kind of decisions that will benefit the group of Americans that has been poor for the last 20 or 30 years?"
Promise Neighborhoods, one of the Obama administration's programs aimed at addressing childhood poverty, has not received full funding from Congress. The program, which is modeled on the Harlem Children's Zone, would replicate the intense geographic services provided in the zone (prenatal care, dental care, all-day kindergarten, quality schools, after-school arts, music and other programs). The cost is about $5,000 per child, and Canada raises much of his $70 million budget from private sources.
Twenty communities, including the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in Montana and neighborhoods in Houston and Los Angeles, are preparing proposals to create their own zones with $10 million in planning money approved last year by Congress. But full implementation will cost the government $200 million and require similar levels of matching money from philanthropy and business. If that money is not appropriated this year, the program could lapse.
"We are in a moment of advocacy because we want to make sure that this program gets funded," said Angela Glover Blackwell, who attended the Haley farm retreat and is president of PolicyLink, a nonprofit organization that has helped communities apply for the Promise Neighborhoods program. "By the end of this year, we expect [some of] these groups to move into implementation. And we want to make sure that the funding is there."
Such funding could be unlikely at a time when Republicans in the House have promised to cut spending. Similarly, bipartisan commissions are working on plans to trim the deficit.
James H. Shelton III, head of the Department of Education's Office of Innovation and Improvement, said that this year the administration probably will have only an additional $10 million for the Promise Neighborhood program and will request more money for the program again in 2012.
"At a minimum, we could have a small-scale implementation, not nearly what we had anticipated," Shelton said. "Communities are moving ahead without benefit of federal resources. They are finding folks who share their vision and getting them to donate."
Edelman said she is similarly undeterred. "We can't let the political weather determine the fate of our children," she said. "Unlike 20 years ago, we know what works. Our task is to scale up."

There are a lot of distortions that go on about the pathological man's ability to 'be happy.' One of the issues of permanent personality disorders and pathology is that at the core of them is unhappiness. That is why they have so many angry outbursts, attitude problems, and failed relationships.
Some of them 'fake' the external appearance of 'happy-go-lucky' or act as if their lives are fine. Partners need to look below the 'presentation' and question what he's showing at face value. Survivors fall for it the first time by getting in the relationship with him and then fall for it a second time when believing his external presentation of his 'life without you in it.'
I chanted it like a mantra so I'll continue to say it, "Nothing changes in pathology because it's hard-wired to not change."
So if he was horrible with you, he'll be horrible with her (eventually). If he was at the core of himself, miserable/unhappy/unsuccessful NOTHING will change. Go deeper than looking at this flash-in-the-pan faux presentation that he WANTS you to see and then feel bad about because you are not with him. Psychopathology does not change and neuroscience continues to teach us why his hardwired brain doesn't allow for change. If you don't believe me, at least believe science. His change is not going to happen now and not simply because he is with someone else. Pathology is not a light switch you turn off and on at will.
The real question is will YOU ever be happy again? Survivors misread their own ability to be happy in the future because they are all wrapped up in STILL watching him, rating him, gauging his happiness against hers.
A recovery question is: Why are you STILL watching him? What in the world does he have to do with YOUR future happiness?
You know why watching him effects your own ability to recover and find happiness? Because the longer you watch him the more intrusive the thoughts become, the more ping-pong brain of cognitive dissonance you keep, the more miserable you stay, and the longer you postpone your own recovery and joy.
When survivors are being honest about what they fear most, it is that he will go on and have this fabulous life and
'be good to another woman' and you will never meet anyone. Since you do want to eventually meet someone healthy to love...what healthy guy wants to be with a woman who is obsessed with a pathological man? Whose eyes are not on THEIR new emerging relationship but on what he's doing next? Instead of your eyes being focused
forward on the future, you have your neck turned backwards looking at her past and what he's doing. What does new Mr. Healthy see--you filled with regret and revenge--not really good material for a new relationship, eh?
It IS understandable why you are angry that he 'appears' to be happy with someone else and you are not. It is also understandable after what you have lived through that you 'wonder' if you'll always pick pathologicals, if you're too damaged to ever have a healthy relationship, if you are even capable of feeling anything other than intrusive thoughts moreless, joy....These are totally normal questions considering what you've been through. But finding those answers for yourself is not found in the glancing over your shoulder at him. There's no going
back.
'Drag an ax and clear a path' into your future. Work on yourself (let us help you!) so you understand 'why' you choose someone like that, 'how' you ignored so many red flags, and 'understand' your own personality traits that leave you vulnerable for relationships like that. There is plenty to heal from! Then, when you've done all the work, LIVE. Don't search it out on Internet dating sites where PREDATORS live. Just live a joyful life and allow that health, vibrance, and joy to direct you. It's when you aren't seeking that you find that which you have been waiting for.
Joyce Brown, my mentor for this work said, "A man is not the 'cake' -- a relationship is only the icing on the cake of a good life."
Heal you, get a great life...and the rest will fall into place. My mother when she was dying said "I'm not afraid to die because I've lived a great life. I've had so much fun and I've been so loved. Who could ask for more?"

in the ancient world when they were known by the same cultural names by which Occultists still venerate as 'gods' to this very day. God will have the unbelieving in such derision that their own eyes will deceive them, they choosing to believe every single lie and blandishment of evil, rather than humbly accepting the truth of God. As such, during that time of Tribulation, which they so sottishly call their New Age, they will believe in only what they think they see, and Satan will certainly provide much to see, for them to believe, and God shall allow them to be so deceived, with the many supernatural sights, wonders, and miracles of Satan's devising, all of which are prophesied to occur just before and during the rise and reign of Antichrist. In a world that has just witnessed a great world war and destruction by way of a comet, a worse time is coming. As the Scriptures make known, the deception will be so great, so completely enamored people will become by all that they see, that even the people of your own household will come under the spell by the new belief system that will be globally propagated to a wounded, hurting world ready to accept anything that seems would help them collectively recover. This will be a frightening time, because as they increasingly come under Satan's control and will, the people who blindly follow this global paradigm will expose those who will not accept the New World view, or its lying Angel of Light and his increasingly powerful Sun-King of a False Utopia, a world where you are deceived by your own eyes, where demons appear as Angels, Satan as Messiah, and the post-apocalyptic 'New Earth' as a one-world global United Kingdom ruled by a "Once and Future King."
Don't be deceived, the world will tell you that all of these supernatural prophetic events occurring right before our eyes, from epic-destructive earthquakes to the day Israel strikes Iran and triggers a massive counterstrike with Russia and Iran attempting to invade Israel causing what would have become Israel's destruction, yet God directly intervenes and while miraculously saving Israel from all her enemies, as Ezekiel 39:6 makes known, a fire from above will be sent down among the nations including the United States and this would be the Comet that then allows for all the rest of Biblical Prophecy to occur beginning with the rise of the New International Global Order of those ten most powerful nations who survive and rebuild to form an empire, a European Empire that shall then impose itself upon the rest of the devastated world. This will be the time of the prophesied "Raiser of Taxes," the European Leader who arises in the aftermath and who shall rebuild Europe "after the glory of the Roman Kingdom." It is only after all of this mentioned above, that the Antichrist arises, however, given that Iran is obviously building nuclear weapons, and that they have already threatened Israel, and given that Israel will certainly strike their nuclear facilities very soon, we are even now so near to the chain reaction of events to begin, and then there is the 2012 prophecy given by the ancient Maya which you now know is not "the end of the world," but the time standing out of time in which this world is completely given over into the hands of Satan and his Angels until the time of Christ's Return 2,550 days after the day Antichrist rises to global power, a time we are now leading up fast toward even as impending signs are all around us, even as the planet itself seems to know and is reacting in strong anticipation. I personally expect to see many of you on the other side, pray for your neighbors, family and friends. Remember, and I cannot stress this point enough, just as the world will witness all of these inevitable Biblical signs of imepending "apocalypse" coming via so many natural disasters occuring all at once, you'd think the world would then take to heart the words of the Bible, yet the exact opposite will be true. Because the world will become increasingly under the spirit of deception, a spirit already at work that is working overtime to make it appear that Christianity is absolutely what mankind should NOT be looking to at this time, people will neither regard the Bible, Christ, or Christianity during the time of epic disasters happening all around them, to their own peril often times.
In place of the Bible and its inherant Truths by which the entire world would be saved, the world is increasingly coddled to adopt a much more liberal, all-encompassing, New Age counterfeit message, seemingly from God Himself, yet you should know by now where all the twisted, seemingly peaceful, everyone-is-God, follow your own path, messages are actually coming from. Indeed, do not be deceived. We are already seeing the trend, with Christianity itself being painted as evil, and evil actually being presented as the new good. This will increase right up until the very moment Christ returns, exactly as the Bible tells us it would. I have already told you that evil people falsely calling themselves "Christians," will go out and commit heinous crimes, purposefully done so that Christianity itself becomes increasingly hated, their goal exactly. Do not be deceived. Look at the way the NBC-owned cable network MSNBC throws Christian conservatives to the lions every single moment they're on air, and the way they commit their lies with such blind audacity, even a mocking pride, behind it. That is just a glimpse of what is coming. In 2012, you will also certainly see a backlash against this new trend in America toward returning to its more Christian roots as well, with people like Glenn Beck increasingly being made into a pariah, blamed and branded by the left-wing media as "dangerous and insane." Look at how MSNBC with unmatched intensity attacks Beck, Sarah Palin, and Michele Bachmann, as their own on-air, fake "journalists" bait MSNBC viewers with lies, half-truths, spin, and fear-mongering, not just against Palin, Beck, and Bachmann, but the majority of traditional Christian America along with them. There is not a day that goes by where MSNBC and left-wing "bloggers" (another type of fake journalist) aren't engaging in an absolute manic feeding frenzy against Christian conservatives, with a near insane insatiable intensity that can hardly be quenched, as if Satan himself is working thru them, advancing his own global agenda. Their conscience has been so twisted and far removed that they actually have no issue with murdering babies in and out of the womb (to the point of wanting such open murder to be funded by our taxes) or supporting that spiritually-deprived and morally bankrupt, historically empire-killing agenda known as homosexuality, and equate it with Godly-ordained unions of man and woman. How so many thru their own ignorance cannot see how prophecy is being fulfilled to the letter in this generation is amazing to me. Watch how those same people sharpending up their teeth against Christians today, will in the near future, just as Christ said, spread their great hatred, ignorance, and lies against the Truth, worldwide. Revolt from all sides is coming. Get ready, for as the American right-wing falls, an increasingly established and cancerous left-wing will fill the void, globally. All this in advance of the Antichrist.
2012 will be the start of America's downfall. As noted by the powerful earthquakes in Haiti and elsewhere, we have just entered the decade of the Antichrist, an age of deadly earthquakes in various places, wars and rumors of new wars, food/water shortages, famine, civil unrest and rioting, uncurable germ strains, species of animals perishing in unexplained ways, "Biblical floods," ungodly spirit and supernatural demonic activity, esoteric signs in the Sun, Moon (Eclipses) and in the contellations of Stars themselves, all relating to what is occurring on earth. Naturally, in the wake of these events, mankind will seek answers, and this is precisely when as Jesus clearly told us, that many will rise up to deceive others with false reasons as to why the world is seemingly revolting against us, so much so that they will deceive many right into the Antichrist's hands. Are you even ready for what is coming upon this world? The epic and increasingly destructive global signs are only pointing to one last event yet to be Scriptually fufilled and they are not only telling us of the return of Christ for His people, they are also shouting at the rest of humanity to awaken from its slumber long enough to realize that despite whatever mankind believes, we are that last prophesied generation that witnesses the coming of Antichrist. The epic global signs that herald the coming of that counterfeit and earthly King, continue. Are you listening? Is anyone listening at all? Take a moment of your life to pray to the Lord Jesus Christ and ask for the forgiveness of any lingering unforgiveness or sin knowing that once uttered with a honest heart, God Himself is then called into action into supernaturally working wherby you are forever changed and will be spared the worst that is coming upon this stiff-necked and unbelieving world, whom the Antichrist will then be able to easily divide, deceive, conquer, then destroy at will.
