Bill Gates describes the Gates Foundation's new emphasis on the advancement of vaccinations to eradicate polio, which he predicts will energize the global health system. "In 1988 when the eradication campaign started, there were over 300,000 cases a year," says Gates. "We're down to having one percent as many cases as we had when we started, only a few thousand a year."

Record high food prices are putting added pressure on the United Nations agency that helps feed nearly 100 million of the world's poorest people, with officials warning of a potential "perfect storm" combination of soaring costs, weather emergencies and political instability.

Poll: Voters divided between Obama and a Republican

(CNN) -- Registered voters are split over who they will support in the next presidential election, according to a new poll. The Gallup survey released Wednesday showed 45 percent of registered voters would support President Obama and 45 percent would support a no-name Republican candidate in a hypothetical 2012 match-up.


Four percent said they would support a different candidate and six percent had no opinion. But the new figures show little change from the same survey taken in February 2010 when President Obama received support from 44 percent of registered voters and the Republican candidate received 42 percent.

Senator tells of sexual, physical abuse

Washington (CNN) -- Sen. Scott Brown, R-Massachusetts, said that he was sexually abused by a camp counselor at the age of 10, and physically and psychologically abused by his stepfathers, in an interview scheduled to air Sunday on CBS.


"Fortunately, nothing was ever fully consummated, so to speak," Brown said of the sexual abuse. "But it was certainly, back then, very traumatic."

"We are on red alert and we are continually assessing needs and reassessing plans and stand ready to assist," UN World Food Programme (WFP ) Executive Director Josette Sheeran told the UN News Centre, as her agency develops an action plan for early purchasing and setting up reserves and safety nets. "Rising food prices are a reality for the whole world, but they have the biggest impact on the poorest and most vulnerable populations."
